Buckinghamshire's largest town, once famous for its chair-making industry when it was known as 'the furniture capital of England'. Set in a steep valley, it has a pedestrianised Georgian High Street, the Little Market House, or 'Pepper Pot', designed by Robert Adam and a handsome, arcaded Guildhall. Behind the Market House is the 12c parish church, the largest in the county, and beyond that is Wycombe Museum. East of the town is The Rye, a wide expanse of grassland bounded by beechwoods. The ancient ceremony of 'Mayor Making' takes place in the town each May, in which the Mayor and Charter Trustees are weighed to see if they are getting fat at rate payers' expense.

High Wycombe is a thriving market town with market days on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and in March 2008 a superb new shopping and leisure experience called Eden opened bringing many new retail brands into the town. House of Fraser, Marks and Spencer and all of the most popular fashion retailers can be found in Eden, as well as the library, a 12-screen cinema, 18-lane bowling alley and a cluster of restaurants.

Wycombe Swan theatre presents audiences with the finest in local, national and international companies and performers.
Next to Eden is a state-of-the-art bus station and new parking facilities with over 1,600 spaces.
Nearby other major developments include a Sainsbury's supermarket and a new £25 million Learning Resource Centre for Buckinghamshire New University.
