Egham

About

Egham town is currently being developed as a Gateway for visitors to Runnymede, with a greater variety of shops being recorded, a brand new cinema, hotel and gym to be completed in August 2018.

Egham is just a mile away from the historic Runnymede Meadows where the Magna Carta was signed, the John F K Kennedy Memorial, the Runnymede Pleasure Grounds with the Queen Elizabeth ll statue and 2 miles from the RAF Memorial at Coopers Hill. On the Runnymede Meadows are memorials to Urban Broughton Hanlon MP designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. One of the kiosks is used as the National Trust's Magna Carta Tea Rooms. Sir Edwin Lutyens only designed 3 river bridges in his lifetime, and the Lutyens Runnymede River Bridge is next to the Runnymede on Thames Hotel.

The ancient former port of Egham Hythe is 5 miles south east of Egham town on the banks of the Thames. This was a Roman crossing place on the 'Devil's Highway' from Londonium to Silchester, near Basingstoke. You can still see the remains of the Roman walls at Silchester. The Swan Inn next to Staines Bridge. The Hythe Road dates from the 18th century. Opposite is the Anne Boleyn Hotel, reputedly where Anne Boleyn waited for King Henry Vlll during their affair. Next to the Swann Inn (now the Swan Hotel) on the riverside are cottages for the people who used to work along the river. There are a range of buildings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

There is 2 hour car parking next to Homebase on the Causeway, TW18 3AP where the Thames Path can be accessed to walk to the Runnymede Meadows to your left or to the former port of Egham Hythe on your right past Staines Bridge. Or there is a pay and display car park at Magna Carta Tea Rooms and a free car park on the other side of the road from the Magna Carta Tea Rooms.

Close to Egham Hythe is Truss’s Island, a small riverside park with a picnic area and public slipway to the River Thames and a free car park.

Travel

Egham railway station is on the railway lines from London Waterloo station to Reading and Weybridge. Passenger services are operated by South Western Railway. Egham has three level crossings. Two bus routes connect the town and Royal Holloway to Staines-upon-Thames, Windsor and London Heathrow Airport.
