The Chilterns AONB

The Chilterns AONB covers 324 square miles, from the River Thames between Wallingford and Marlow, up through Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire. It also covers the Thames towns of Henley on Thames, Goring, Streatley-on-Thames and Pangbourne.The Chilterns is one of the best places in the UK to see red kites and provides lots of fascinating places to explore and many tranquil spots to get away from it all. Visit historic houses like Stonor Park and Mapledurham or take a tour of a vineyard or brewery.

Cycle Chilterns

Why not get on your bike – the circular Chilterns Cycleway comes down to the Thames valley near Wallingford and Henley. The Chilterns Cycleway passes through Henley town centre crossing the river at Henley Bridge. National Cycle Network routes 4 and 5 can both be joined close to the town by following signs to the Cycleway. The Hambleden Valley and the area between Fawley, Nettlebed and Sonning have some of the best bridleways and byways in the Chilterns.

Walks for all

Don’t leave the Chilterns without taking a walk! There are many leaflets on scenic circular walks, including walks by the Thames. Some of these are short easy strolls for the less mobile while others are longer and more undulating. From 1.5 miles to all day hikes along the two National Trails which cross the area: The Ridgeway and The Thames Path. There are also regular events such as guided walks and family fun days with lots of activities for children.
