About
Close to Henley on Thames , Marlow and a stone’s throw from London, is the ancient home of the Stonor family, dating back to the twelfth century, this has been their family home for over 850 years. Nestled in a Chiltern Valley the house dominates a magnificent view of the beautiful deer park and woodland.
Set within the heart of the Chiltern Hills, there are three gardens to discover – from the ponds and fountains of the 17th Century Italianate Pleasure Garden to the old Kitchen Garden designed and nurtured by Lady Camoys and the eclectically treed Arboretum.
Explore the parkland fringed by a host of centuries-old beech and ash trees and is home to an ancient herd of fallow deer who have supplied venison to countless Kings and Queens throughout history. Living alongside the deer are badgers, hares, rabbits, pheasant, soaring red kites, ravens and buzzards.
Beyond the warm red brick Jacobean façade, a stroll through the house is a vivid walk through history. Discover art and treasure collected from across the globe, view historic maps, documents and artefacts that reveal generations of service to the country.
Highlights include the grand Gothic revival hall, atmospheric 17th century library and dramatic long gallery opening onto the beautiful Italianate gardens, with borders full of seasonal flowers and stunning lily ponds.
Whilst at Stonor, visit the cafe located in the 13th Century Hall, open from 12pm and the Gift Shop offering local produce and craftware such as Stonor honey made by their own bees. For children there’s also Tumblestone Hollow, perfect for all ages, but particularly younger children up to around 12 year olds. Combine a visit with lunch at the Rumble and Jumble Huts serving pizza, Italian Gelato ice cream and more to come. There’s 10 acres of fun and adventure to enjoy.
As the house is a collection of medieval buildings behind a Georgian facade, it is not suitable for wheelchairs as even the ground floor is not on one level. However, everyone's disability is individual and there are chairs at intervals for visitors to rest. To see the first floor there are flights of stairs - one up and another down.
Dogs are allowed in the designated areas of the park but must be on leads
