About
A few steps away from the River Thames on Victoria Embankment, and just outside of Embankment Tube Station, are these wonderful gardens, providing a welcome retreat from the busy streets.
Relax in a deckchair and enjoy a programme of events throughout the summer surrounded by grass areas and impressive bedding displays throughout the year. Continually voted one of London’s Green Flag Parks.
Opened in 1865, made from land reclaimed from the River Thames as part of the development of the Victoria Embankment, it was considered at that time to be the finest thoroughfare in Europe. The Thames used to be closer and in one corner of the park stands the historical Watergate, built in 1626 as an entrance to the Thames for the Duke of Buckingham. There are several statues in the park, a memorial to the poet Robert Burns and war memorials commemorating the Second World War and the newest for Iraq and Afghanistan.
Embankment Cafe is a charming garden pavilion with parkside terrace for light all-day cafe menu and ice creams.
If you would like to hold an event or film in this park please visit the Special Events website at www.westminster.gov.uk/specialevents or call 020 7641 2390.
