Beginners Guide to choosing your first boat

Research
When thinking about buying a boat, firstly consider how you will want to use it:
- On the river, on the coast or both?
- Are you a family with children or a dog?
- Do you want to entertain friends on board for days out?
- Will you looking at days trips or overnight stays for longer trips?
Establish a Boat Budget

Types of Boat
Trailer boat
A Trailer boat gives you the freedom to travel to a number of boating locations. They are a cost effective option as you can store on your driveway saving on mooring costs. Small 10-15ft trailer boats can be typically bought from £7,000 - £10,000.
Bray Marine Sales has recently become the sole UK importer for the Polish brand Kruger boats – a great entry level boat for beginners on the river.
27ft Sports Cruiser
A 27ft cruiser can be bought typically for £15-£30,000 with cabins and berths ideal for first time river cruising and offering fantastic entertaining space in the cockpit.
35ft Cruisers
At this size you will have a choice of an open cockpit offering more “day” space or alternatively an “aft cabin” offering two separate sleeping areas for those looking to spend more time aboard cruising. Prices are around £40,000 - £80,000
Narrowbeam or Widebeam cruisers
For those looking for longer term cruising options, including canals, you can consider buying a narrow boat or widebeam cruiser.
Prices are around £50,000 - £180,000
