Boat Hire FAQs
What type of hire is available?
Daily/hourly hire
Most companies offer day boats and many offer rowing boats, skiffs, canoes and dinghies, so no matter how energetic you're feeling there is something out there for you.
Holiday hire
Many boats are equipped with home-from-home comforts. They offer hot water, showers, flushing toilets, modern kitchens, a high standard of furnishings and comfortable sleeping arrangements. Your hire boat operator will explain everything and give you full advice about cruising, mooring and using the locks.
Special occasions
Want an office party with a difference, an unusual wedding reception or do you just feel like throwing a party to remember? Then charter your own boat complete with crew, skipper and catering.
Hotel boats
Want the fun of travelling along the river, but don’t want to bother with the cooking and cleaning? Then why not discover the secret of hotel boats. They are specially built to provide accommodation which, although compact, is comfortable with the added bonus of ever-changing views from your cabin window! Find out more in our Places to Stay section.
I have never driven a boat before, how do I get started?
Most boats are much easier to operate than a car. Your hire boat company will explain everything you’ll need to know before you set off.
Do I need to operate the locks myself?
Often locks are operated by lock keepers during the day. They’ll help you through the lock and answer any questions. If you arrive at a lock where there is nobody on duty, you can operate the lock yourself, full instructions are on the green lock operating pedestal.
For more information about lock keeping hours of duty and details of lock facilities, see the Environment Agency lock pages.
Are there plenty of places to moor and tie up?
Your hire boat company should give you some advice on this before you set off. The lock keepers should also be able to point you in the right direction. In general there are moorings at regular intervals along the river - some more obvious than others. For more information, see the Environment Agency moorings page.
How fast can I go?
The River Thames has a speed limit of 8 kilometres per hour (approximately 5 mph). You'll find a handy guide to the time it takes to get between the different locks at this speed on the Environment Agency website. You should also allow extra time to pass through the locks.
Can I hire a boat if I have a disability?
The River Thames provides for all visitors including those with reduced mobility. Find out what is available.
Can I bring my pet?
Many hire boat companies will allow pets on board ranging from parrots and budgies to cats and dogs, either free or for a small charge. Always check with the company first though.
