About
Description
Our specially adapted community barge, the Richmond Venturer, provides day and residential cruises for people of all ages and abilities from its berth in Kingston, and is also used as a floating classroom by schools.
We offer a variety of heavily subsidised cruises and activities tailored to the needs and interests of children and adults with disabilities, community organisations, schools and colleges, as well as individuals who are not part of any group.
School on the River offers a day of activities on board the Richmond Venturer and ashore which use the Thames as an educational resource. The activities are based on our Key Stage 2 environmental education pack, specially developed by the River Thames Boat Project and written by a local teacher.
School on the River provides:
· A comprehensive cross-curricular environmental study programme of the Thames
· A variety of fun, hands-on activities which take place on board the Venturer and on the river bank
· A range of subjects including Geography, History, Science, English, Maths and Art
· Experienced teachers are employed to deliver School on the River, supported by our trained volunteers
· Work sheets for photocopying
· The Teachers’ Notes provide useful background reading and National Curriculum links
The Venturer is moored for the day alongside the towpath and used as a floating classroom. The boat can accommodate a class of 30 children plus staff and accompanying parents. Please bring pack lunches. There are toilets on board and lunch can be eaten on deck or down below if the weather is wet.
Community Boat Leadership Programme is a four day residential experience that provides leadership training for 16-19year olds through learning to run the Richmond Venturer our 26m community boat. The training is hands on and fun.
· Boating Skills – Learning how to steer a boat, handle ropes and work locks.
· Safety – How to safely operate a boat while cruising.
· The Waterways Environment and Heritage – Learning about the wildlife on the waterways and how it can be protected.
· Event Organisation – After initial training the young people lead an event for their family and friends to celebrate their success.
Following the course there are real opportunities to contribute to the River Thames Boat Project or other boating organisations that are members of the National Community Boats Association.
